Community Based Programs
For over twenty five years, the Art Therapy Studio has offered unique, innovative community-
based art therapy programs. Our community-based studios, located on the campus of the
Fairhill Center, Ursuline College and River's Edge, are places where clients participate in
creative arts classes structured to provide an expressive outlet. Broadly encompassed under
the title “
Discover the Artist Within You,” (DTA), the programs consist of quarterly group
sessions that focus on specific issues and various approaches to art. Emphasis has been
placed on persons with special needs and those over 55 years of age. A wellness component
also brings together people who wish to use the creative arts as a means of stress reduction
and personal growth.

Community-based studio programs and classes are available to people with special needs on
a sliding scale basis. Our Board of Trustees and staff work hard to ensure that no person
needing services is ever turned away because of inability to pay.

In addition to the DTA programs at these community-based sites, our staff provides individual
and group art therapy sessions for autistic and behaviorally challenged children; stroke,
Alzheimer, spinal cord, and brain-injured clients; developmentally disadvantaged people; and
those suffering from chronic depression or other emotional disorders.

Over and over again, our clients have experienced the healing power of art.

Client Art Shows – Art Works!
Displaying client artwork provides a rewarding opportunity to boost self-esteem and establish
people as artists. The Art Therapy Studio places importance on encouraging creativity as the
basis for change and growth, and not just to “pass the time.” The process of creating a piece
of art is cathartic, but sharing it can also be exhilarating. For this reason, we regularly exhibit
the work of the artists who participate in our programs, sponsoring
Client Art Shows at all of
our sites and at other locations in the community.

New beginnings can be difficult; it is not easy to adapt to loss
or changes, especially those that are not our choice.
ART is
about new beginnings. Each painting, sculpture or drawing
teaches us about adapting and resolving.  It helps us make
connections and understand our own human processes.
