WheelArt - Rolling toward Wellness
As part of our innovative treatment of spinal cord injured patients at MetroHealth Center for
Rehabilitation, the Art Therapy Studio developed a new art form – painting with wheelchairs.
Rolling through brightly colored pools of paint, physically challenged artists create murals and
one-of-a-kind designs on T-shirts, socks, aprons and other items using dynamic bursts of
color made by the treads of their wheelchairs.
The therapeutic results of WheelArt are immediate and exciting to watch. Many, who are
otherwise unable to find a creative means of expression, participate in this integrated effort
where their contributions are unique and esteemed. Just as each artist has their own
personal style, each WheelArtist has an individual flair and tread that leaves its own unique
“print.”
The Art Therapy Studio has conducted special projects with schools, nursing homes and
other community agencies, bringing WheelArt to many physically challenged children and
adults..
